Lakewood
Lakewood is one of those Dallas neighborhoods whose appeal makes sense almost immediately. Set along the western edge of White Rock Lake, it combines winding, tree-lined streets and distinctive older homes with something much harder to find in the middle of a major city: everyday access to the water, trails, and open space.
The lake shapes life here, but it isn't the whole story. Tudors, Colonial Revivals, Craftsman bungalows, and newer homes share streets that have evolved over generations rather than all at once. Lakewood Elementary remains a visible center of neighborhood life, while the Lakewood Shopping Center and nearby commercial pockets give residents places to eat, shop, and run into people they know.
That's part of what has made Lakewood so enduring. It feels connected to Dallas without feeling consumed by it. Downtown is close, but mornings can begin on the White Rock Lake trail, weekends tend to spill outdoors, and the neighborhood itself still has a strong sense of place.

Schools
Lakewood is served by Dallas ISD, and its neighborhood schools are an important part of the community's identity. Lakewood Elementary sits within the neighborhood itself, with J.L. Long Middle School and historic Woodrow Wilson High School nearby. Both J.L. Long and Woodrow Wilson offer International Baccalaureate programs.
For buyers, school assignments should always be confirmed by address. Attendance boundaries don't necessarily follow neighborhood boundaries and can change over time, so Dallas ISD's current attendance-zone maps are the best source for a specific property.
Parks & Outdoor
White Rock Lake is Lakewood's defining outdoor amenity and a meaningful part of everyday life in the neighborhood. The 1,015-acre lake is surrounded by a roughly nine-mile trail used by runners, walkers, and cyclists, with opportunities for sailing, rowing, kayaking, birdwatching, and time along the shoreline.
The lake is also home to landmarks including the Bath House Cultural Center and Winfrey Point, while the Dallas Arboretum sits across the water on its eastern shore. Lakewood Country Club, a private golf and social club, is another longstanding part of the neighborhood landscape.
Shopping & Retail
Lakewood Shopping Center remains the neighborhood's traditional commercial heart at Gaston and La Vista—a compact mix of restaurants, coffee, services, and longtime local fixtures that feels woven into daily neighborhood life rather than separate from it.
A few minutes north, Hillside Village adds another concentration of dining and everyday retail near Mockingbird and Abrams. Together, the two give Lakewood something many primarily residential Dallas neighborhoods don't have: recognizable neighborhood centers that residents return to again and again.
