Dallas, Texas… Summer may be winding down, but the temperatures are still keeping things hot.

This week’s edit moves from a lantern-filled sanctuary at White Rock Lake to photography rooted in Mexican tradition, a hyperlocal film festival in the Arts District, and an exhibition opening in the Design District where art, science, and design converge. And everything is indoors where the AC will keep you cool. 😎

Consider this a weekend for lingering a little longer.

⭐ EDITOR’S PICK | The Art of Charrería

Charreria by Brent Kollock (fellow SMU alum)

Before the boots, buckles, and horses became shorthand for Western style, they carried histories of identity, skill, family, and tradition.

Opening Saturday at the Latino Cultural Center, photographer Brent Kollock’s Charreria looks closely at Mexico’s equestrian tradition through portraits, personal narratives, and years of observation.

Kollock—an SMU graduate who now lives in Nayarit, Mexico—approaches charrería as both spectacle and living culture.

Go early for his 5 PM artist lecture, then stay for the opening reception.

Longing: Light & Sound Interactive Exhibition

At the Bath House Cultural Center, Longing transforms two enduring symbols of Vietnamese culture—the nón lá and the Mid-Autumn lantern—into an immersive landscape of shimmering light and sound.

As you move through the installation, gentle melodies and light respond in turn, making the viewer part of the work itself.

Go Saturday night for the opening reception, then step outside to White Rock Lake after dark.

Sometimes the setting is part of the art.

Convergence at Laura Rathe Fine Art

What happens when sculpture, photography, and material become difficult to separate?

Convergence opens Saturday at Laura Rathe Fine Art, bringing together new work by Matt Devine, Stallman, and Nick Veasey.

The mediums range from contemporary sculpture and sculpted canvas to Veasey’s extraordinary X-ray photography, but the common thread is transformation: familiar materials and objects made unfamiliar enough to demand a second look.

Saturday’s opening reception makes this an easy reason to spend late afternoon gallery-hopping on Dragon Street.

Dallas Asian American Film Festival

Saturday’s Dallas Asian American Film Festival isn’t simply bringing Asian American films to Dallas. Its focus is deliberately closer to home: Asian Texan voices and filmmaking.

The free daylong program moves through the Arts District with a filmmaking workshop at the Crow Museum followed by experimental, animated, and live-action shorts and a feature presentation at the Dallas Museum of Art.

The closing film, Tadashi Nakamura’s Third Act, turns the camera toward his father, pioneering filmmaker Robert A. Nakamura, in a deeply personal exploration of art, family, memory, and legacy.

A local film festival with a genuinely specific point of view is worth making room for.

Three Days of Design

September is about to give us a very good reason to talk about interiors.

Dallas Design Week returns September 15–17 with three days of designer conversations, showroom programming, book signings, and industry events at Dallas Market Center.

The name I’d circle now: Charlotte Moss.

The celebrated interior designer and author joins a week that also overlaps with ARCHLight and the national ASID GATHER: Catalyst conference—putting a significant concentration of the design world in Dallas at once.

Just a handful of experiences that make you see the city—and perhaps something familiar—a little differently.

I’ll keep looking beyond the obvious for the art, culture, design, places, and experiences that make living in Dallas interesting.
