Dallas is putting on a show this weekend—sometimes with an actual stage.

The first weekend of September lands somewhere between summer's last act and the beginning of Dallas' fall cultural calendar.

This week's edit leans into live performance, but not all of it requires sitting quietly in a theater. There's Broadway talent in a cabaret-size room, an after-hours return at the DMA, a familiar film backed by a full symphony orchestra, and an evening in the garden when you need an intermission.

And one of my own longtime favorites arrives onstage next week.

Here's what's worth making plans for.

Reeve Carney at CLUB 909

A Broadway performer you'd normally expect to see from several rows—or several hundred seats—away is spending three nights in one of Dallas' more intimate rooms.

Reeve Carney, the original Orpheus in Hadestown on Broadway, comes to CLUB 909 at the Music Hall at Fair Park for Broadway Divas, a cabaret-style evening built around songs made famous by Broadway's leading women.

The official title is fun. The setting is what makes this the Editor's Pick.

CLUB 909 trades the scale of the Music Hall for cabaret seating, putting Carney in a room where the performance can feel considerably closer and less formal than a traditional touring production.

If you like Broadway but rarely think of Dallas as a place to see Broadway performers this way, that's exactly why this one made the list.

🎨 AFTER HOURS | LATE NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

The DMA, after dark

The Dallas Museum of Art is bringing back Late Night—and this isn't simply extended museum hours.

On Friday, all four floors stay open until 11 PM, with live performances moving through the Concourse, Atrium, and galleries, alongside artist demonstrations, tours, hands-on art-making, cocktails, and bites.

The exhibitions are part of the draw, too. Samurai to the Imperial Court: Japanese Metalwork and X Marks the Spot: Contemporary Screenprinting at Brand X Editions are both open during the evening.

Go for the art. Stay because a museum feels entirely different after dark.

Late Night tickets + full schedule

The September 4 edition launches the DMA's new season of Late Nights, with whole-museum access and programming throughout the evening.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in Concert

There are movie nights, and then there's watching Hogwarts fill the screen while a symphony orchestra performs the score live beneath it.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra brings the sixth Harry Potter film to the Meyerson this weekend, with Lawrence Loh conducting as the film plays in HD.

You don't need to be the person who can name every Horcrux to appreciate this one. Part film screening, part concert, it's an unusually accessible way to experience what a live orchestra can do to a score you already know.

And the Meyerson doesn't hurt.

🌙 INTERMISSION | TWILIGHT NIGHTS

Dallas Arboretum after sunset

Not every good weekend plan needs a curtain call.

Twilight Nights gives this week's lineup some breathing room: the Arboretum stays open until 9 PM as Hunt Slonem's monumental sculptures shift with the fading light and the garden moves into evening mode.

There are cocktails, bites, and music, but the real appeal may simply be wandering the garden after the worst of the day's heat has passed.

It's also entering its final month. Twilight Nights ends September 27.

Consider this the intermission.

📌 PLAN AHEAD | ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

The Sound of Music

I'm allowing myself one personal pick this week.

The Sound of Music has been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember, so its arrival at the Music Hall at Fair Park next Tuesday was always going to get my attention.

The new North American tour opens Broadway Dallas' 2026–27 season and runs September 8–20. It's directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien and marks 65 years since the musical's original stage debut.

This one isn't for this weekend.

It's the one to put on the calendar before next weekend gets here.
